The Bait
• The poem is an imitation of Marlowes lyric called The Passionate Shepard to his Love, which was a very famous poem that invited much criticism and many replies to it were made. ...
• Marlowe says "We will all pleasures prove" in the second line of his poem, Donne uses the same first two lines in his poem, declaring that this poem is an imitation of Marlowes, but replaces the word "all" with "new", showing that it is a parody, and it will not be about the idyllic life of lovers and the Shepard. The word "prove" is more to the point in Donnes poem, in which it means to try and test.
• Lines 3 and 4 of The Bait are full of attractive, rich, shimmering images that appeal to the senses and seduce the lady like a Sirens song. ...
• "Silken lines and silver hooks" tell us that the poem is about fishing and that Donne wants to take the lady on a fishing trip.
