Although in the USSR they did not yet have the capabilities for sound Eisenstien, Alexandrov and Pudovkin believed, that sound ‘might not only hinder the development and improvement of cinema as an art form but might also threaten to destroy all its formal achievements to date’. They also believed that although sound could be used in montage cinema to enhance or create juxtapositions, sound that is in synch with an image disconnects the film from any artistic statement. ...
They thought montage cinema had established filmmaking as a strong art form and that sound would steal the effect created by montage.
