The first theme I would be explaining is the idea of “Perfection vs. Imperfection”, which also refers to “Purity vs. Impurity”. David’s society was obsessed with normality. David’s ability to recall religious statements on the subject easily attests to this. David recalled these religious statements after his first meeting with Sophie, the girl with six toes on each foot. (Chapter 1, Page 10-11) These statements include “…God create man in His own image. And God decreed that man should have one body, one head, two arms, and two legs: that each arm should be jointed in two places and end in one hand…” Two paragraphs contained these statements, spread over the bottom of page 10 and the top of page 11. The definition of normality seemed to be because of religion, almost like religion was an excuse, resulting in these deviants and norms. “Blasphemy was impressed on me a frightful thing”. Fear was used to suppress people. (Chapter 1, Page 14) In Joseph’s childhood, mothers used to quieten troublesome infants by threatening, “Be good now, or I’ll fetch Old Maggie from the Fringes to you. She’s got four eyes to watch you with, and four ears to hear you with, and four arms to smack you with. So you be careful”. ‘Or Hairy Jack was another ominous figure who might be called in “…and he’ll take you off to his cave in the Fringes where all his family lives. They’re all hairy too, with long tails; and they eat a little boy each for breakfast every morning, and a little girl each for supper every evening.”’ (Chapter 2, Page 21) Offences and Blasphemies.
