Fairy Story Fairy Story is a very realistic and subjective poem that many people these days can relate to. It is about the situation and state many wives and children are left in when their husbands and fathers leave them. The first few sentences (' I spent the first month peeling onions explaining my tears to my daughter' ) shows us that the only way the mother was able to hide the real reason of why she couldn't stop crying was by pretending that her tears were caused by onions. Then the next few sentences tell us that she was lost about what to do when her husband suddenly left and the words 'closed the door on us' also creates an atmosphere of rejection to add to the fact that the reader is already pitying the mother. In the second paragraph the use of the metaphor 'I was a shot pigeon' is very effective to the reader, both emotionally and visually.
