Michael Jackson: The Man in the Mirror
The name of Michael Jackson typically brings to mind images of a flashy pop star, one who has sold millions of albums and lives on a “fantasy-like” estate called Neverland. Or images of a man with a burning love for children and the means to help them overcome their struggles and fall into the friendship graces of a rich, but certainly unspoiled, star. ... Michael Jackson is a mega talented, successful, and giving star who gives astonishing amounts of money to charity and allows many children into his estate on an almost daily basis for a day of fun “on him”. But despite all this, Michael has been overwhelmed with bad press lately. ... But who is Michael Jackson really? ...
Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, the seventh child born to his parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson. Michael led a fairly normal childhood life until the age of 5, when during his Kindergarten graduation, Michael belted out “Climb Every Mountain” for the audience. The ladies and gentlemen in attendance that spring morn were in awe over Michael’s youthful, but clearly phenomenal voice. His father noticed his abilities and opted to make Michael the lead singer for the musical group he was forming out of his sons-the Jackson 5. The “5”, composed of Michael and his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Tito, and Marlin, began displaying their talents in clubs and bars in their hometown of Gary. ... From this discovery, the Jackson 5 got an audition for Berry Gordy of Motown Records. ... The Jackson 5 recorded fourteen albums and Michael went on to record four solo albums of his own with Motown.
 Young Michael Jackson
Michael’s father continued to play the role of manager in his children’s life. But for all his wise choices and success as a manager, Joe Jackson apparently was missing the formula to produce the same positive results in his role as a father. According to Michael, his father never gave him hugs, proclaimed his love for him, or gave him “piggyback rides”. He would hurl insults left and right at Michael, especially as he entered adolescence. He would puncture Michael’s self-esteem by saying things like “God your nose is big.
