Volunteerism is a vital function of many organizations, often providing them with the necessary support to accomplish their goals and objectives. Some organizations rely on volunteers to perform day-to-day operations, while others call on them to help with special events. Regardless of their responsibilities, volunteers have become increasingly necessary for organizations to be successful, resulting in a steady demand for their services. In 1995, 93 million American adults (49% of the adult population) did volunteer work, combining for a total of 20.3 billion hours (Clary & Snyder, 1999). Despite the large number of volunteers, there is often a greater demand for them than there is supply, so analyzing the characteristics of volunteer motivation and volunteer satisfaction is extremely important for recruiting new volunteers, using them effectively, and retaining them.
