Abstract: Bovine Spongifom Encephalopathy (BSE) is caused by a misshapen protein called a prion. If an animal eats their own species or even another species, they can transfer infectious prions. The purpose of this paper is to examine which species and which animal parts carry the disease. Intro: The first serious outbreak of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) occurred during the 1980s and 1990s in Europe. BSE is believed to have originated from the sheep disease Scrapie. The sheep were ground up as part of cattle feed and was then passed on to the cattle who ate the feed with sheep remains. The disease was not thought to be transmittable to humans, so the infected meat was allowed into the food supply.
