Animal research has been pervasive in medical science and research. Usually, the debate over animal research has been futile because it has involved more rhetoric than anything else. In the articles “Animal Research Is Vital to Medicine” and “Animal Research Is Wasteful and Misleading”, we get contrasting views on animal research from an empirical perspective. In the former article, the main argument presented is that animal research has been essential to the success of almost all fields in medicine. The authors cite several examples where animal research has been very instrumental in saving lives, such as in kidney dialysis, prosthetic heart valves, etc. Though this argument is convincing, it is not persuasive enough to end the debate. The main reason is that, even though animal research has been of great value in some cases, it does not mean that advancements could not have been made without it. Even though the authors argue that in some cases it would be impossible to research on humans, to the extent that they research on animals. However, human testing is not the only alternative to animal testing. In addition, though the authors cite several examples where animal research has been successful, it does not mean that it will continue to be, or even that it will be successful at all with humans.
