Z for Zachariah is a Science Fiction novel by Robert C O’Brien, which takes the characters through the horrific aftermath of a nuclear war. During the course of the story, the characters are faced with many challenging events and settings, which highlights the key issues in the novel. There are three main issues faced by the characters in this novel. The first is survival, which is presented to the characters in different ways in the story. The second is individual freedom, which is an issue that faces only one of the characters. Finally, the consequences of nuclear war and the resulting devastation are considered. One of the three main issues outlined in this novel is survival, which is present in both characters’ individual stories. The evidence of this issue is constant throughout the story, for example after the nuclear holocaust, Ann’s family tries to see if anyone is still alive in the next town and they never return, leaving her to survive on her own. Along with the responsibility of keeping everything alive so she can stay alive as well, in the distance she can see someone coming and she gets scared so she hides herself in the hills just in case the person is dangerous.
