Juvenile Deliquency

The federal, state, and local government measures juvenile delinquency by many statistical tools. These tools include the Uniform Crime Report put out by the FBI. Many public and private groups including police departments take criminal and victim surveys. Juveniles play a major role in crime and society. Our youth is our future, so defining crime and rehabilitating youth is a major concern of the law enforcement community. From working with juveniles at The New Jersey Training School for Boys in Jamesburg, NJ I have seen many youthful offenders come through. As my research and stats will show they are mostly between fourteen to seventeen years of age. They tend to be African American from Urban areas with low-income families. Many Blacks and Latinos in the US live below the poverty line compared to Whites. 26% of Blacks, 27% of Latinos compared to only 8.6% of Whites. According to the Census Bureau, the median income for Whites is approximately 37,000 and 24,000 for Latinos and Blacks. Delinquency rates can be attributed to socioeconomic conditions. Areas that have high poverty rates will have higher delinquency rates as well (p109). Long-term unremitting poverty undermines a community and its residents, instilling within then a sense of hopelessness that makes antisocial behavior seem attractive (p109).
