THE PHYSICS OF THE PERFECT CARVE
The first part to skiing after learning the snowplow is trying to turn. In more modern skis a design feature to aid in this task is the side cut of a ski. This can also be broken down into math and physics to explain how it works. ... First is the ski edge that forms the arc of the circle in the wedge. Second the contact line is the widest point on the tip of the ski to the widest point on the tail of the ski. Next is the “side cut depth” which is the distance from the contact line to the narrowest point of the ski. The side cut radius is found by assuming the ski edge is a curve or arc of a circle, and determining the radius of that circle.
