Dr. Strangelove According to General Jack Ripper in the film Dr. Strangelove, “War is too important to be left to the politicians” so he took matters into his own hands and launched an aerial nuclear attack on communist Russia. This film was quite entertaining and had me wondering, “Could this really happen and if so what would be the result of such actions?” With all of the security and intelligence leaks we hear about in the news, how hard would it be for an officer of that rank to convince the men who live by his orders, to carry out a mission such as this? I do not believe the idea of a general coaxing his men to attack without the necessary approval is too far fetched. What I do not know is how much damage could any man in that position really cause? Is the system of checks and balances on military and government officials capable of preventing such acts? Next, the weapons in the movie are not as advanced as the weapons we currently posses and are capable of producing; however is there really a “Dooms Day” defense system and if so would anyone really release that information? How would it work, and would it really kill everyone on the planet? Failsafe Failsafe was a film that dealt with the dependability of our weapons and operating systems. During a routine flight an unidentified flying object enters U.S. airspace. Our squadrons of bombers head to their failsafe points (strategic positions in preparation for attack) awaiting their next command. A message is sent to all squadrons to return once the object is identified as a commercial flight which veered off course. Unfortunately the signal never reached a squad headed to Moscow due to a communications failure. This film presented the possibility of an accidental attack on another country due to equipment failure. This movie left me with mixed emotions. You are left with a feeling of uncertainty as to whether or not the technology we have today is capable of preventing such mistakes. Even more we wonder how our leaders are going to respond. It seems highly unlikely that our president would offer to blow up largest city to compensate for such a mistake, but could it happen?
