In the play, “The View From The Bridge”, tragedy is created by Eddie Carbone through the act of loving Catherine, betrayal, and lost of reputation. Living in Red Hook Brooklyn, New York, Eddie Carbone is a hardworking husband with a loving wife, Beatrice. Eddie has a niece named Catherine, who he promised her mother on her deathbed that he would be responsible for her. Since Catherine is a beautiful, smart, young girl, who is very popular among the boys in the community, Eddie is shown to be overprotective. The fact that Eddie strongly disapproves Catherine of wearing high heels is an example of Eddie being very overprotective because he is fearful that if she looks attractive, some man will ask her out and she will leave the house. ... They allow her to grow up and become a woman, which Eddie is afraid to see since he still calls Catherine “a baby” (Pg 7).
