white oleander

The movie covers the ages from 14 to 18 in Astrid's life. When we meet Astrid, she's living a relatively happy life with her erratic and sometimes irresponsible artist mother, Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer). Ingrid is absolutely positive she knows what the world is all about, and she's determined to share her gritty and tough world-view with her daughter. Unfortunately, just as Astrid is reaching an age when she can begin to think for herself, the major influence of her mother is taken away; after killing her cheating boyfriend, Ingrid heads off to jail for murder. Astrid is then taken to a series of foster homes, and it's remarkable to see how each of her foster situations influences her character; combined with the occasional visit to her mother, whose experiences in prison are hardening her soul even more, Astrid must take all this information and somehow figure out who she really is. Although most of her foster family situations don't end happily, Astrid never seems like a victim; instead, it's always clear that Astrid is a survivor, someone who will take each experience in turn and, eventually, grow from it. Analyzing Astrid's character, we notice that she suffers from loss of identity. She finds herself torn apart between different foster homes. She doesn't know who she really is.She feels unsafe and insecure but it is all repressed in her subconscious. The impression given to us in the movie is that she is a survival , someone who manages to grow out from each experience without being affected by it in a negative way ,but I see it as a defense used so as not to show her inner weakness.
