Julie Skovbo Pedersen 1. E d. 21-10-2003 A birthday to remember The themes in this text are subjects like love, courage, being different and acceptance from those we love and admire. For example the love between Ell and Tobie or between Ell and Jackie. It is also about having courage to be who you really are. Just like Jackie did when she left her husband for a woman. And for Ellen it is important to be accepted as a good parent by Tobie. The text takes place in America, they send each other Valentine Cards. It could be in any town, south or north, small or big. It maybe a smaller town, since the father thinks that it will hurt his male ego when somebody finds out that his wife left him for a woman. This particular incident takes place late in the afternoon. This story starts in medias res, in the middle of everything. We do not get an introdution and we have to read on if we want to find out what is going on and who the characters are. The main characters of the story are Ellen and Tobie. Jackie is also important, but she is not a main character, she is not in the story as a real person, but just as a memory.
