If we truly want people to remain out of prison, they have to be given a chance – to be given an opportunity not to have to drag their history behind them for the rest of their lives. ... She doesn’t dispute the fact that people need to be in prison for a long time, and that victims have rights that also need to be respected. She does challenge New Zealanders to think about what brings people to prison and how they are treated when they get out.
