In 1931 “superstition” was published in a black owned magazine entitled “Abbitt’s” monthly magazine. Richard marries Dhima Rose Meadman in 1939, then marries his second wife Ellen Poplar in 1941. Richard’s first daughter Julia is born in 1942. Richard hungers emotionally, he feels out of place with his family. Richard feels his family would feel a lot more content without him there.
