The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was the era of the rise of absolute monarchy. Europe at in this time consisted of very poor people, but at the same time was coming up fast in technology and science. Thomas Hobbes said that “the discipline of absolute monarchy was necessary in order to form masses of selfish and mutually destructive individual human beings into functioning societies.” Absolutism was the main form of government in the 17th and 18th centuries, and Hobbes supported absolute monarchy in order to create peace and harmony. Hobbes’s studies on Absolutism took up were Niccolo Machiavelli left off. Machiavelli was strong about having more than just military strength, but having the ruler hold himself above the normal rules. He believed in a state or a commonwealth society, and that’s where Hobbes picks up the pieces and puts them together. Hobbes had many influences on the work of John Locke. Like Hobbes Locke saw the state in a “secular light” and went against religious doctrines to say that God did not create the state.
