Imagine playing monopoly with game pieces that include a pimp and a 40-ounce, instead of the conventional racecar and shoe. Then, visualize playing monopoly without the highly prized Park Place or Boardwalk, but with Hernando's Chop Shop and Ray Ray's Chicken and Ribs. This new game, "Ghettopoly," is the innovation of 28-year-old Taiwanese immigrant David Chang and is just like the classic "Monopoly" - except that everything depicted on the game board is "ghetto." Perhaps the most disturbing portion of the game are the caricatures of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Not only did Chang purposely misspell the historical civil rights leaders' names to "Malculm X" and "Martin Lother King Junior," but he goes as far as to use King's famous quote, "I have a dream," changing it to, "I have an itch." Many leaders have been outraged at the stereotypes this game perpetuates, particularly about black Americans. New York City Councilman Bill Perkins and the Rev. Robert P. Shine Sr., president of the Black Clergy, have blasted the game as blatantly racist.
