Random Drug Testing in Public Schools
Now days almost all students that participate in after-school activities know exactly what is expect when it comes to random drug testing. Random drug testing can also be identified as being an unknown urine test to see if the student has been or is using any type of illegal or legal substance. Students that are participating in after-school activities are sometimes disappointed when they are asked to participate in a random drug test, but they must because they must sign a pledge that states that they are going to be drug free. Random drug testing in public schools has become a routine for students that are participating in after-school activities.
The purpose of random drug testing in public schools is to insure that the students that are participating in after-school activities are not using or abusing drugs whether they are legal or illegal to help increase their performance or for their own personal pleasure. As it stands right now in the United States “…approximately only 5 percent of middle schools and high schools across the country use random urine tests. ... Most schools in the United States only require their athletes to sign a pledge that states that they are not going to use any illegal substances out of school, but then again they can perform random drug tests at any point if they suspect that any athlete has been or is still using an illegal substance. ... In addition, when testing for drugs “the timing of the tests and the selection of youth must truly be random to assure that the youth cannot predict to whom and when the tests will be given…” This is the only true way to insure that the tests are random (Bailey 5).
