Lysistrata is a play of sexual innuendo and with no purpose other than to entertain its audience. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Undoubtedly sexual innuendo is used throughout Lysistrata to a comedic effect and value. However beyond that it is realistic to assume that there are much deeper and thought provoking statements submerged within the text. Through maintaining a light tone to the play and classifying it as a comedy Aristophanes is ultimately keeping the plot and his themes non- threatening, which does not force the audience to initially be offended or secondly reject what is being said. An ancient Greek audience would find the play considerably unrealistic at the originality and rareness of the protagonist being a women, and not only this, but this woman then goes on to have the audacity to attempt to end the war. It is a combination of these key factors which contribute to the surrealism of the piece for a Greek audience; for whom it was written. With Aristophanes being aware of this there was then little barriers to which he could not over step, without creating an uproar with his new previously unheard of concepts.
