Transparency of Evil
The transparency of evil. What is evil, how can we know what it truly is, if we cannot even see it? ... We first have to ask ourselves, ‘What is evil itself? ... Baudrillard does not give an exact definition of his own, but from what is made rather clear throughout his essay, and from what I understand; the destruction, violence, terrorism, viruses, disorders, and alterations that we constantly inflict upon, specifically, ourselves, defines today’s ‘evil’. ... Baudrillard, The Transparency of Evil, London: Verso, 1993, pg3). ... ’ (ibid, pg 72) I believe Baudrillards comments on this problem of modern day society, focus on how we can no longer see the evil, for we have ourselves become it, yet we cannot oppose it, for there is no turning back.
