Folktales: Effects and importance Every society has their share of folktales and myths. American children are bombarded with such classics as Little Red Riding Hood, or Jack and the Bean Stock as soon as they’re able to understand them. These tales all serve a purpose and often reflect elements and the true character of a given society. They also can preserve or retain certain aspects of society for future generations. The same can be said for folktales of other cultures. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Sony, 2000) is an epic folktale about Li Mu Bai and his legendary sword the Green Destiny. The Green Destiny is a sword with almost surreal martial art power. (Fear, Culture Vulture) This aspect of magic is very prevalent in many folktales. A masked female whom is very keen in martial arts steals the sword, and the movie then builds up from there glowing with love, emotion, and legend. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon became an extremely popular movie in both China and America. It won 4 Academy Awards in 2001 and was nominated for 11, including Best Picture. The story is very similar to common Chinese folktales and displayed a little bit of Chinese culture throughout the world. Folktales are a very important tool in a society, as they serve several purposes. One of their purposes is to preserve their culture and history. Folktales gleam with elements of a society. Whether it is their traditions, their language, or their way of life, every folktale has a message to be heard. Another purpose of folktales is to instill certain morals and values into the hearts of their readers. Much like Aesop’s Fables, Chinese folktales also share common morals that are prevalent throughout the world. Additionally, Chinese folktales provide entertainment and fun. Folktales originated prominently in a time before television, radio, and the Internet. They were communicated mainly through oral tradition, and passed down from generation to generation. Because of this, no particular author or group of people can be attributed to many folktales. This also builds a veil of myth around many folktales, since it is unknown how much they might have been altered as they were passed down by mouth for many years. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is very remnant of these aspects. The story itself is filled with Chinese folktale, martial arts and dance. There are multiple amazing martial arts scenes, which serve multiple purposes.
