Over the years things have changed in many different ways, such as the way women are treated. There had been a huge improvement in how much authority a woman has compared to the biblical times. The way we live has changed also, such as our houses and cars, the things we eat and the clothes we wear. Two novels that really show the different ways of life long ago are Jane Eyre and The Red Tent. Jane Eyre and The Red Tent take place in two different time periods. Jane Eyre takes place in the early decades of the 19th century and The Red Tent takes place during biblical times. Because of these different time periods there are many differences in the novels. There are also many things that are very much alike, even though these books are written in different eras they have a connection. The connection that Jane Eyre and The Red Tent have is that some of the major themes have to do with gender and society. In Jane Eyre and The Red Tent there are some similarities and some differences that stand out. Poorly treated women, women’s love life and different living and lifestyles are some of the bigger themes in Jane Eyre and The Red Tent. The women in Jane Eyre and The Red Tent are much alike even though the stories take place in different eras. The women are poorly treated from the men and other people in their lives. The main character in Jane Eyre was brought up in a household where she wasn’t treated very well. When Jane was younger she lived with her deceased uncle’s wife and her children, and she was treated badly by all of them. “Accustomed to John Reed’s abuse, I never had an idea of replying to it; my care was how to endure the blow which would certainly follow the insult,”(Bronte 5). In this quote her cousin John is shown to always beat up on Jane she just took what he gave her and she never retaliated against him. Later in Jane’s life she had to beg for food and she was in some cases ignored and just brushed aside. It wasn’t only men who were doing this to Jane it was women too. “‘Would she give me a roll for this handkerchief?’ She looked at me with evident suspicion; ‘Nay, she never sold stuff I’ that way, ’”(381).
