1984 Big Brothers Role in Society

Big Brother’s Role in Society

In the novel 1984, George Orwell’s imaginary totalitarian society opens eyes. His world of telescreens, Newspeak, falsification of history, and Big Brother shocked many readers. Big Brother is the symbol of the controlled society, the all-powerful leader of Oceania. Big Brother constitutes for Oceania as what God constitutes for society today. It is Big Brother who enforces the totalitarian control on the people in 1984, as God enforces control upon the people today. The people of Oceania are brainwashed into worshiping Big Brother, as society today was raised to go to church and to believe in God. There is no hard evidence proving either, Big Brother or God, but the people of both societies strongly believe in their protector and guardian.
God has enforced control over our society for years. ...
Big Brother enforces the totalitarian control over the people of Oceania as God did for the people of our society. “Big Brother is infallible and all-powerful. ... He sees all and hears all (through the telescreens scattered all over the city) and the people were constantly reminded of this when they would see the posters all over town, stating “Big Brother is Watching You” (5), or when another confession of a “Thought Criminal” was aired on the telescreen.
