During the early sixteenth century, there was criticism of the corruption of the Roman Catholic church ,and some of its practices.Reformers such as the frenchman John Calvin and the German Martin Luther urged christians to go back to the teachings of the bible,even if this meant ignoring church traditions. The Roman Cathloic church grew from the early chiristian community in Rome claiming St.Peter as the city's first bishop and the first pope.After the fall of Rome,the chrurch survived in western Europe to become the dominant form of christianity in this area.Today, Roman Catholicism is practiced all over the world. The community of christian believers is called the "church"which is also the name of the building in which christians worship. The most solemn christian ceremonies are called sacraments.The Roman Catholic church recognizes seven sacraments. BAPTISM People are formally admitted into the church.The ceremony usually involves water,recalling the ancient practice of baptizing in rivers.
