Four Composers of the Romantic Period

INTRODUCTION

The Romantic Period was a period of time that concentrated on the fantasy of music. ... The Romantic Period is exactly what it describes, romantic. According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language the word romantic is defined by; “given to thoughts or feelings of romance, displaying, expressive of, or conducive to love, imaginative but impractical; visionary, and not based on fact; imaginary or fictitious”. Yet as simplistic at this may seem this is what the composer’s of this period were trying to portray. Fascinations with fantasy, dreams, and the themes of the Middle Ages and Shakespearian plays led the composers of this time to delve into there imaginations and prepare some of the most moving music. The impact of this music not only dealt with the love these composers had with fantasy, but also with the love they had for their country, identity, culture, and history of their nationality. ... Four men who portrayed such expression were Franz Shubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Giuseppe Verdi. ...
FRANZ SHUBERT

Franz Shubert was different from other composers because he never held a music position and never became a composer. ... Among these were Gretchen am Spinnrade and Erlkönig, also numerous songs, besides two more symphonies, three masses and four stage works. ... During this period more songs poured out, including Der Wanderer and Die Forelle, and instrumental pieces - inventive piano sonatas, some tuneful, Rossinian overtures, and the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies. ...
Though Shubert had great success from the period of 1820-1821 he had a dark period in his life. ... Yet, this dark period did not damper his creativity. ... During this period he wrote what is considered one of his most important symphonies the Great C Major, which was never performed in public during his lifetime. ... During this time he had trouble with his hands, allegedly due to a machine to strengthen his hands, but most likely from a syphilitic sore, he continued to compose several piano works from this period. ... Because he had written so many pieces based off of his affairs of the heart understandably turned in that year to song; he wrote circa 150 songs, including most of his finest, at this time, among them several groups and cycles, the latter including Frauenliebe und -leben (A Womans Love and Life) and Dichterliebe (A Poets Love), which tells a tragic Romantic story of the flowering of love, its failure and poets exclusion from joy and his longing for death. ... Yet when Clara Schumann died in 1896, this inspired him to create Four Serious Songs. ... During this period Italy was struggling for freedom and unity and though Verdi was sympathetic to this the implication that Verdi’s operas during this period had political themes and undertones are greatly embellished.
