Types of Programs for the English Language Learner

Transitional Bilingual Education: The goal of this program is to mainstream students to all-English classrooms. Instruction for academic subjects is in the students’ native language, but a certain amount of each day is spent on developing English skills. Classes are typically made up of students who share the same native language. After students have been mainstreamed, no emphasis is put on the retention and development of their native language skills. Developmental Bilingual Education: Developmental programs differ from transitional programs primarily in the amount and duration that English is used for instruction and in the length of time that students are in the program.
