Media play an enormous role in our lives, from print, to broadcast media, we are inundated with often regulated and controlled information every day. Often the way it is presented to us can affect the way we perceive the information, creating ‘social panics’. However, the degree to which youth are controlled by the media is very difficult to identify and in turn regulate. Firstly, one must identify what is meant by the term “youth”. ... For instance, David Oswell refers to the use of the term youth as a means of portraying a person when their actions are outside what is considered the normal behaviour of a child. He claims that the term “child” is given ambivalence between the terms “child” and “youth”, as means to expel a dangerous youth from society we tend to give it the term youth, however another person can be the same age as the “dangerous youth” and we call him a child as if to preserve his innocence. ... So a youth going by this definition could be someone even as young as ten. ... ” As generations progress the boundaries of the term “youth” become wider. ... The media has a way of indirectly preying on the fact that young people have disposable money due to casual jobs and make up a huge market in terms of alcohol consumption and magazine purchases so will target that audience more.
