Nietzsche In On the Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche attempts to describe the origin of our most basic human values by describing the interactions between master and slave. Nietzsche poses this question: “Under what conditions did man devise these value judgments good and evil? ... Therefore, Nietzsche must liberate the reader for established perspectives and refute all moral prejudices. For this reason, Nietzsche returns to the origin of morality and not to contemporary values. In this respect, Nietzsche uses the story of the master and slave in order to suggest an origin for value. ... Nietzsche notes, that there cannot be an original or true designation of value since the master and the slave must always reevaluate the world in entirely different ways. Nietzsche further on in the Genealogy, describes the history of the West as the history of the slave triumph, in which all the active forces have been negated or suppressed. Nietzsche writes: “The masters have been disposed of; the morality of the common man has won.” Nietzsche argues that not only has the master been defeated but because he has lost his original voice he has been condemned to silence. ... In the First Essay of the Genealogy, Nietzsche clarifies the basic characteristics of the masters and slaves within mythology. ... Nietzsche describes that anyone that is in a state of ressentiment must also be in a state of actual physical suffering.
