Keep Marijuana Illegal

The debate over the legalization of marijuana is of paramount importance to treatment providers, healthcare professionals, educators, police officers, families, and the millions of American men, women and teens whose lives are at risk because of marijuana. It’s a debate that has shifted focus over the years from a "freedom of choice" position to medical applications, to most recently, a ballot initiative in Nevada that proposes the creation of far-reaching legislation that would eliminate penalties for possession of an amount less than three ounces, and regulate marijuana in a similar manner to tobacco and alcohol.

     The marijuana of today is exceedingly more stronger and more dangerous than it was in the 1960s and 1970s because it may be mixed with other dangerous drugs. Marijuana contains more than 400 chemicals, like aresenic, and resin. The use of marijuana can lead to many negative consequences, including bad grades, broken friendships, family problems, and trouble with the law. What is more important, is a teenagers brain and body are still developing and using marijuana can interfere with their emerging independence and efforts to establish their own identity. Marijuana use can change the direction of a young persons life- physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. It can weaken the ability to concentrate and learn information in school, impaired judgement leading to risky decision making like getting into a car with someone under the influence of marijuana. ... Marijuana has tremendous effects on the brain especially. ... When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to organs throughout the body, including the brain. ... The short-term effects of marijuana can include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate.
