John Barry Jonathan Barry Prendergast was born the youngest of four children on Friday, November 3, 1933 in York, Yorkshire, England. At age nine he began playing the piano and soon after, at age fifteen, he stopped public school and worked as a projector in a movie theater owned by his father. Before long, he developed a fascination for film music and this soon became his ambition. At the time he was working in the theater, he began composing to the movies he showed (www.filmmusic.dk). While doing his National Service, John joined the army in Egypt and Cyprus until 1955. There, he was in the army band playing trumpet and quickly learned how to arrange jazz. Upon leaving the force, he formed his own band, “The John Barry Seven”. He initially sang in the band until it later moved into instrumental music. Because they were making regular appearances on the BBC TV series, “Drumbeat”, the band became very successful. As the band continued to thrive, Barry met Adam Faith and suggested that he sing regularly on the television program.
