Leadership Self-Evaluation

A leader can either be born or developed, but the leader, above all, needs to have good communication skills. A leader needs to be able to talk and listen to the group and be able to give constructive criticism. He or she should also be able to take information from the group and make good, sound decisions. A leader is someone people turn to for advice or help. I was more of a leader in high school than I am now in college. In high school, I was captain of the field hockey, basketball, and softball teams. Also, I was the class president and a council member of the Varsity Club. My basketball coach and athletic director described me as a quiet leader. I was a good role model for others to follow, but I never really took charge of the team. As class president, I did not have to do too much because my class advisor did most of the hard work, like ordering decorations for the Junior/Senior Prom. My big finale of high school was being the opening speaker of graduation. I got the chance to write and present a speech to all in attendance, and I surprised myself with a smooth presentation. Since I am the second oldest on the softball team at college, I should be one of the leaders because I have experience, but unfortunately I do not stand out as a leader. I have noticed that as I get older, being a quiet leader does not mean as much as someone who can communicate with the group.
