Human Resource Management (HRM) is a distinctive approach to managing people. It is obvious to anyone that businesses cannot function without people. These people must not only be skilled they must be well motivated. Success, and even survival, for companies requires an understanding of people management. HRM owes a great deal to older models of people management but in the 21st century changing organizations require a change in these theories. ... Changes occurring within the company also affect people’s motivation and how they behave e. ... This assignment will give a short overview of these changes within an organisational context, and an overview of people-management theories and practices. ... Mayo’s fundamental idea behind the human relation approach to management is that people’s needs are important factors in achieving organisational effectiveness (Mayo 1949). Content theories concentrate on what things actually motivate people to act in a particular way or as Mullins (1999) pointed out that `these theories are concerned with identifying people’s needs and chase relative strength’s and the goals they pursue in order to satisfy these needs`, which shows the figure below adapted from Peach & Mundell 1995. ... He claims that these do not in themselves motivate people, but can de-motivate if they are perceived to be inadequate in any way. ... Nowadays more and more people are motivated by work which is challenging, which streches the individual and entails more responsibility. Locke’s Goal Theory (1968) states that providing people with challenging yet attainable goals can be means of fulfilling these higher level needs. By asking several leaders how they inspire or motivate ordinary people to do extraordinary things, it was obvious that they were mostly influenced by psychological concepts. ... She suggests facing people with their negative attributes will be accepted by each one. ... He suggests that people on top of an organisation often forget to look back down to the people on the bottom of this organisation. ... Putting people to work in teams increasing performance in the broadcasting company. ... It is significant to point out that this team was unique within the company and is indicative of its determined efforts to maximise its people management effectiveness. During an internship you meet a lot of people who talk about their teams and it was obvious they were not as lucky as we were and it was clear that they were de-motivated. ... It was very important that people belonged to a team that they could bond with socially. ...
