Total DarknessA Description of a Dive
Out of the Darkness, A Description If the light goes out I will be in total darkness. The kind of darkness one might encounter in a cave, or a grave. Diving at night is eerie and very scary. A sea monster could be following me and just about ready to swallow me whole and I wouldn’t even know it. On the other hand, if a sea monster is about to eat me, maybe the darkness is a good thing. It is truly amazing how a flock of birds and a school of fish are so similar in that they both move in unison, seemingly with a single purpose. Now I am right in the middle of a huge school of shad. They dart left then right, moving as though they were all connected together by some invisible web. I follow them along through the surrounding darkness, up and down, sliding, drifting with the current, moving like a ribbon in the wind. They glow and sparkle in the light beam. Their beauty is breath-taking. Thousands of them, surrounding me and then as suddenly as they appeared, they are gone and I am alone. A shudder of fear comes over me and I long for their return, their comfort, the safety in their numbers. Then as if an answer to a prayer, they are back again, and I am happy once more. Out of the darkness, off in the distance, a long slender shape startles me. Then it is gone but it was there I am sure of that. The school of twinkling friends suddenly veers of to the right, away from the intruder.
