One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a criticism of how state mental hospitals treated their patients in the 1960’s. One method used was medication. The patients were just given it and not told what it was for. They were basically forced to take these medications and the hospital thought it was helping but I really don’t think it was. When McMurphy asked what kind of medications they were, the nurse wouldn’t tall him and just made him take it anyway. I feel that that is completely wrong, crazy or not, a person should know what the yare taking medications for. The patients spent much time talking with the nurses as a form of psychoanalysis. The nurses basically made them feel bad about themselves. I know there were several times when the nurse put them down and I don’t feel that that is effective treatment. The patients also had to go through shock treatment. I don’t know how they thought that would work because I feel all it would do was make them crazier if they were even crazy in the first place. The patients would be shocked till they didn’t know what was going on anymore.
