Macho Man

Richard Goldstein’s article “The Nation: Neo-Macho Man” seeks to answer the question of what tactics president Bush is using to persuade the American public that he is the macho leader of this country and he knows what is best for his people. ... He argues that based on history it is not natural that people would be willing to go along with Bush, after all he is “a strong man who is wrong”. ... [and] Why people are drawn to the strong man who is wrong? ... Thus, Goldstein says that when 9/11 occurred “the mindset of manly belligerence was already in place [and] in the horror that followed, we struggled for a way to respond- and we found it in the icon of neo-macho man”(1). ... The “masculine, macho male” was idealized. ... There was a now a need for a leader to be macho. As is indicated by the fact that after 9/11 Donald Rumsfeld was included in People’s top sexiest people as was Bush and Gulianni, the epitome of macho. ... Thus, by going to war with Iraq, he is merely fulfilling the duty that society expects of him, which is to be macho. ... He explains that after 9/11 people were seeking that type of macho leadership and they found it in Bush, which is why there was a rise in popular opinion for Bush after 9/11. ... The fact that it was a source of stability once before, convinces people that it is reasonable to think that this macho man will again be victorious. ... Goldstein believes that Democrats are less macho in their manner of governing than are Republicans. ...
     Hence, Goldstein sets up this whole picture in which Bush is the macho male figure who is going to protect the people from all evil. ... He tells the story in such a way that Bush comes off as this macho, aggressive, extremely powerful person that no one can reject because of what he stands for. ... femininity allows Goldstein to emphasize the action of the Republicans or the macho male and the power that he has gained through manipulation of a situation.
