During the time period between 1945 and 1990, the United States and the Soviet Union relationship are mistrusted, suspicious, and fears. Immediately, after the fall of the Japanese in World War II, the United States began to develop the military and diplomatic means to contain the spread of the Soviet power and communism throughout the world, known as containment. By 1949 the United States and the Soviet Union “embarked on a nuclear arms race” (Roark 1023); both countries wanted to be the supreme power of the world, and spread their government and economic beliefs to other nations; the United States wanted to spread capitalism and democracy, while the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism. These two beliefs contradict from each other, and thus bringing a suspicious relationship between the two great powers.
The Soviet Union and the American interests clashed first at the end of World War II in Eastern Europe.
