The structural components in the music itself, and the thematic arrangement contribute to the interpretation of specific images and a metaphorical interpretation of the second movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto in G Major. A particular psychic pattern and subsequent in-depth analysis can be drawn from the arrangements of metaphorical moods. Through recurring thematic material, and changes in the dynamic level, textural complexity, mode, and rhythmic activity (and the alternations from somber, dark music to light, whimsical music that these changes create), Mozart’s Piano Concerto in G Major is a metaphor for the mental state of a protagonist who’s loved one is dying from a terminal illness.
The structural elements of the “a” (the motto) and “b” themes, and their dominant use throughout the exposition, development, and recapitulation, lend to the fluctuating emotions of the protagonist in the metaphorical interpretation of the Piano Concerto in G Major. ... The major mode and musical poetry of the “a” theme also gives a light, whimsical feeling. ... In the “b” theme, the dynamic level builds and recedes many times and makes multiple switches between the major and minor mode as well. ... The repeated changes from major to minor mode represent the transition from remembering a happy memory to the dark and somber reality of losing the loved one.
