“Barbie Doll” By Marge Piercy “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy is a poem that all girls and women can relate too. This poem represents the struggles that all girls go through, thorough their adolescent years, including differences in appearance, personality and person struggles of self-worth. As well as gender roles in American society, puberty, and worn out emotions. The poem begins with talking about gender roles and society’s views on people and children and how the “have” to be from birth in order to be expected into American society. This girl child was born as usual and presented dolls that did pee-pee and miniature GE stoves and irons and wee lipsticks the color of cherry candy (1-4) In lines1-2, the poem talks about dolls and miniature GE stoves and irons, relating to the “roles” that women are supposed to portray in their life time, such as Barbie plays for many young girls. When young girls play with Barbie, she is normally cooking or cleaning and has a new kitchen set come out every year for young girls to play with.
