Upon entering the city of Eldorado in chapter XVII, Candide and Cacambo are overwhelmed by the riches they find within the city. ... Candide learns that here, the children are taught to despise gold and jewels. ... ” This statement shows that Candide believes these actions impossible to be happening because no one would ever despise such riches. ... Candide and Cacambo were so impressed by the wealth of these people that it leads the reader to believe that wealth is the only importance to people. ... “Elsewhere” would be all the other non-perfect towns, which would also be considered the real world to Candide. To Candide, Eldorado seems to be the best of all possible worlds, tying this chapter into earlier chapters. ... Throughout his previous travels, Candide took part in numerous unfavorable events, so compared to all of those, Eldorado is the best of all possible worlds.
