Effects of Alcoholism When someone in the family is an alcoholic, the whole family is affected. The family has to adjust to the ever-changing mood and behaviors of the alcoholic. Family members often blame themselves for the alcoholic’s behavior and the alcoholic blames the family for all of his or her woes. The family always wonders if they can convince the alcoholic to stop drinking. Anything they can do or change to make the behavior stop is constantly on the minds of the affected family members. There is usually a fear of the alcoholic’s behavior, and that it may cause the family to break up. Families of alcoholics often feel embarrassed or ashamed of the situation, and there is an unspoken rule to not speak of the problem outside the home. Often, nobody outside the home is aware that the problem doesn’t exist.
