October 24, 2002 You Gotta Fight For Your Right! For countless years women have been disputing, protesting, and fighting for their rights. Throughout history it is seen over and over; even today feminist continue to battle to acquire equalization with men. One of the very first steps in the long process took place in Rome as the women rose up and opposed the Oppius Law. This act set an example as well as set the stage for women in the future to come together and protest. There are many instances in American history as women protest and take action just as in Early Rome. In 195 BC, the women of Rome rose up against the government to protest the Oppius Law, which was suggested by two tribunes. The law stated: “…that no woman should possess more that half an ounce of gold or wear a parti-colored garment or ride in a carriage in the City or town with in a mile thereof, except on the occasion of a religious festival.” The women claimed that because the state was increasing its wealth as were the men, the women should be able to have their rights given back just as they were before.
