Enhanced solubilization of soil Al by acidic precipitation has been proposed as a mechanism contributing to forest decline in eastern North America, Europe, and Scandanavia (McLaughlin, 1985). ...
Neglected in this hypothesis is the potential ability of the plant to influence the Al chemistry of the soil immediately surrounding the root (the rhizosphere) or at the root surface (rhizoplane). Indeed, the preferential exclusion of Al from plant uptake is one mechanism of Al tolerance of plants (Marschner, 1986). Plants have the potential to significantly influence the soil solution chemistry of metals within the rhizosphere.
