Death and the King’s Horseman is an intensely complex play which undoubtedly examines many themes. The unfortunate exchanging of responsibility of Elesin, the faithful chief and horseman of the King, and Olunde, the supposed traitor of his nation, to be the central point of the play. ... There almost seems to be no Western equivalent to the "duty" of Elesin in Death and the Kings Horseman. ... To be sure, Elesin knows his duty very well and is convinced that Yoruba people’s future depends on his suicide as he confidently states, “I shall not turn aside”. ... I think this is the moment of Elesin’s awakening.
