Glass Menagerie Dreams of Escape
In Tennessee Williams’ classic play, The Glass Menagerie, every character had their own dreams of escaping the monotony of everyday life, and/or escaping their own painful world of present and/or past. ... Each character: the missing father, Amanda, Laura, Jim, and Tom, had wonderful dreams relative to escaping his or her own reality. ... The missing father had worked for the phone company, and was always dreaming of long distances, and ended up escaping his family life to pursue those very dreams. ... She always visualized herself, again and again, as the pretty Southern Belle, wearing the finest dresses, to escape from the present. ... This would enable Amanda to finally allow Tom to escape. Amanda, herself, was always trying to escape from the consequences of her marriage. ... Laura lived in a world filled only with dreams. ... She practically lived within her glass menagerie; a collection filled with translucent little animals, which epitomized her life ¾ you could see through them, but the image was distorted. ...
