Probably one of the most important figures in the Old Testament is Moses. The writers of the Torah, along with the first Christians, spoke of Moses life as being divided into three time periods – his time in Egypt, his time in the wilderness of Midian, and his time leading God’s people out of Egypt and into the promised land. God speaks to Moses after he has spent forty years in Midian. ... 1
Each of these periods of time was a very important aspect of God’s work in Moses – one that was necessary not only for Moses’ good, but also for the role he would play in preparing the children of Abraham for their new life in the land of Canaan. ...
“Exiled from the comfort he had previously known, an outcast among the people he had sought to help, Moses entered a second phase of his life”.3
This was a time when God could deal with Moses more directly, a time when God would teach him the humility that he would need to become the deliverer and leader of his people. ...
“Now the man Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth”. 4
But years would pass before Moses would see Egypt and his people again. God could not reveal himself to him and send him back until Moses had learned the humility that would keep him dependent on the Lord. ... Moses, a Hebrew, now dressed like a Midianite shepherd, and having been raised in the Pharaoh’s royal household, was now ready. Trained in Egypt, and shaped in the wilderness, Moses was now ready to lead his people out of Egypt. Exodus 3:9-10 reveals God speaking to Moses. ... 6

“He then commissions Moses to free His people from slavery in Egypt and to lead them into the fertile land of Palestine”. 7

Moses also had an important role of lawgiver. The Book of Leviticus reveals God instructing Moses to institute laws pertaining to the Israelites daily living. ...
