The Crisis of Abortion and Parental Consent
Being a teenager in today’s world is not an easy task. ... A major topic of controversy for teens today is the act of having an abortion, itself, and whether or not if teenagers should be required to consult their parents about doing so. In Maureen Muldoon’s book The Abortion Debate In The United States and Canada, she states that “Over the last twenty-five years or so, the debate on abortion has not moved any closer to resolution in either the United Sates or Canada” (xiii). The word “abortion” alone can cause much unwanted attention and a person can be looked down upon because of it. ... Bill to Back Parental Consent Abortion Laws,” “Twenty two states have laws requiring teenagers to notify or consent their parents before getting an abortion, or to ask a judge’s permission (A30). The teenage mind is not yet ready to deal with decisions such as whether or not to go through with an abortion by their self. There are many reasons why a girl might want an abortion such as being too embarrassed about their situation, having a bad reputation, or being worried that the baby would not be perfectly healthy. In Janet Podell’s book Abortion, she stated that “…31 percent of pregnant teenagers have an abortion because they did not want other people to know that they had had sexual relations…” (6).
