Since the first Olympics of the modern cycle the number of women and the number of sports and events open to competition at the Games have increased. Women even today have to live with the fact that there is a myth about them stating that they are the ‘weaker sex’.
The first modern Olympic games took place in 1896, but women did not compete in track and field events until the Amsterdam Olympics of 1928. In that time there was a threat to De Coubertin as the women were insistent that if they could not compete then they would set up their own version of the games just for women. But when women were allowed to compete eventually in 1900 they were only allowed to compete in more ‘lady like’ sports such as tennis.
