To Kill A Mockingbird
Many things can change the vision we have of someone in particular. In the novel, examples of such things are prejudice, indignity and hate. Such things have separated people from one another and created a system of social injustice. This system is seen through the social classes of Maycomb County, where some are superior to others while some are inferior. In the novel, this social class system has affected the lives of different characters, such as Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss the effects of the town’s social prejudice on these characters. The strong prejudice of Maycomb County and the negative effects of its social strata are clearly seen during Tom Robinson’s trial. Tom was a kind-hearted and hard-working man, who did all he could to please and be helpful to the people known as the “white trash.” He shows this caring for people by helping Mrs. Mayella. Tom got accused of rape of this white woman, and although Atticus, Tom’s lawyer, made it immensely clear to the jury that Tom was innocent, the jury convicted Tom of the crime he was being accused of.
